Power Ballards...
Caught a few on an MTV special recently. A tsunami of nostalgia crashed over me. Whatever happened to them? Nothing really like the old one's from the 80's and 90's.

My top pick..'You're the Voice' by John Farnham in '86. A rip roaring sing a long ballard.

What's yours?

Yes, that's just what the world needs. You in positions of authority.

I think I should be on the Plaque Committee.

I can be trusted to use my unbiased, objective and completely fair scrutiny to weed out all the undeserving Lefties.

I like the idea of a WHO Wall of Plaques, and can easily imagine Nurse's plaque sending a frisson to its neighbours.

Re: Power Ballards...
Kollontai wasn't dreary! She was a fiery, ambitious Bolshevik famous for her immense sexual appetite.

She had a lot in common with you. Her personality was not to everyone's liking. Some of the other leading Bolsheviks despised her and called her every name under the sun.

Sound familiar?

Eventually Lenin gave in and banished her (to Scandinavia, to become a lowly Russian ambassador to Sweden.)

On a recent trip to Moscow I noticed that she doesn't have a memorial plaque on the Kremlin wall where all the other luminaries of the revolution are honoured. I looked for it for about an hour (there are a lot of plaques) thinking I must have missed it. But they actually airbrushed her out of history.

I hope that doesn't happen to you. If there is ever a wall of plaques to commemorate the luminaries of WHO you will surely have earned your place.

Unless H&P is in charge of the Plaque Committee of course.

Re: Power Ballards...
Anybody who likes 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' has lost the ability to discern music from noise.

The title of the song makes no sense. The lyrics are appalling and childish. The harmony is irritating. And Tyler's voice is simply not good enough for a professional singer.

It has no musical merit whatsoever.

As an economist, I have to point out the opportunity cost to consider here too.

Life is short. Three minutes wasted listening to a power 'ballard' (arf!) is time that could be spent listening to musical genius, like Sweet Home Alabama, Beast of Burden or Kashmir.
